Student Green Tips | 3BL Media

Here at Colorado Rocky Mountain School we have a long legacy of environmental stewardship and implementing sustainable practices including our recycling and food composting program which removes all viable products from the waste stream. But even at a high school as conscientious as ours, we still have areas that we could improve. One such area was recognized by our students and given out as a “Green Tip” to our entire 150 student-body:

The problem:

  • The U.S. throws away almost 50% of their food every year. That’s about 51.8 tons of food.

  • Just 5% of America’s food leftovers could feed 4 million people for a day

  • CRMS throws away about 250 pounds per week. Even though that food doesn’t go to the landfill, it still is being wasted.

A solution:

  • Take only as much food as you can finish. You can always go back for more if you’re still hungry.

Global Initiative for Haiti Relief Calls for Choirs to Join Forces to Sing for Haiti | 3BL Media

(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – January 21, 2010 – The zyOzy
Foundation, today announced a global initiative to raise much-needed
funds for Haitian relief.

Amy C. Wolff, an Indiana University graduate student specializing
in non-profit management, zyOzy collegiate advisory partner and song
composer, is calling upon choirs all over the world to help raise money by
video recording her composition “A Brighter Way,” an inspirational, musical
“call to action,” which, as Wolff states, “is a powerful statement of rising
up, serving and bringing hope to those who need it.”

Wolff conceived the idea of a global choir initiative after family
friends miraculously survived and escaped the deadly earthquake, which
struck Haiti last week. “My heart has broken for Haiti,” she continued. “I
listened to my dear friend describe the horror of thinking his wife and two
children had been lost in the earthquake. By a miracle, they all were found
alive. I’m dedicating this project to honor this family, specifically, the
eldest daughter, who loves and is inspired by the beauty of music.”

“Imagine choirs from all over the world coming together to sing for
Haiti – singing on behalf of those who cannot be heard. This will be a
powerful, transformational movement.”

All the choir’s vocals and videos will be combined into one video
piece that will air on February 14 across the internet on social media
outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube. Television
network pickup is also expected.

While soliciting the participation of choirs from across the globe,
Wolff is seeking corporate and individual donors to support the initiative
with a minimum goal of $30,000. Every cent will be used for Haiti
through CARE’s Earthquake Relief Fund. Anyone inspired by this
phenomenal project can make a donation via the Internet, on the Brighter
Way Haiti Choir Citizen Effect project page:
http://citizeneffect.org/projects/brighterwaychoir_haitirelief/.

Three major choirs already have signed on to participate: The Rural
Fund Childrens’ Choir of Uganda, Africa, the Crescendo Chorus of
Connecticut, and famed Voices of Eve ‘n Angels – the Voena Childrens’
Choir of California.

“The combination of music and investment in effective relief work
like CARE provides will enable the story of Haiti to continue,” Wolff
says, “we are committed to telling their story and the story of those
suffering in poverty around the world. It is our mission. It is our calling.”

For information on choir participation or to contribute, visit the
zyOzy website at http://zyozy.org or contact Amy C. Wolff at 203-520-4326.

The zyOzy Foundation, established by social entrepreneur, Steve
Jennings, in 2005 and headquartered in Chicago, IL, is a 501(c)(3) not-
for-profit humanity benefit organization. Its mission is to change the way
we think, the way we make decisions, the habits of our hearts and how we
do business in today’s world.

New Year’s resolutions are a dime a dozen. Why not make 2010 a year of meaningful resolutions? | 3BL Media

At a fundamental level, climate change and agriculture are two issues that are inextricably linked; risks from flood, drought, and disease all loom large over our global food systems. And the impact of those food systems themselves on climate change is dramatic; packaging of food products and the impact of waste on the environment are only growing as significant issues. Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of their food choices and are learning that not all multinational food companies look alike when it comes to their attention to issues like water scarcity, toxicity, animal welfare, and, of course, climate change.

That said, because of consumer awareness and engagement, more and more food companies are getting the message. Ten of eleven companies in the food products sector improved their Climate Counts scores from 2008 to 2009.
